Weekly Village News for Oct. 18, 2024

From Frank...

Just when I think that I’ve shared all my memories or personal attributes or quirks related to the Village, I remember something else pertinent. So, now I’ll confess to loving a bargain. Perhaps it stems from all those Saturday mornings going to yard sales with my mother in the 1970s. Today, I could give you a listing of various thrift stores in the DMV. Even recently when in South Florida, I couldn’t resist stopping at the Goodwill and found a designer brand polo-style shirt valued at $225 new for only $6. What’s not to like?

On Monday at noon, we will launch our Fall online auction! I hope to pique your interest both in finding a “steal” but also supporting a great organization.  Bookmark the site and come back on Monday to see all the great items. (We’ll also remind you on Monday!) Here’s a quick preview of some of the fantastic items that have been donated year:

  • A great selection of gift certificates of various amounts to Fat Pete’s BBQ, Giant Food, Cactus Cantina, Talea Ristorante, Little Blackbird Wine Bar, Byblos Deli, Teaism, Rose Ave Bakery, Massage Envy, Politics & Prose, Souper Girl, La Piquette, Legal Seafood, and more!

  • Services such as a brand-new garbage disposal plus installation, vacuum or sewing machine tune -up, etc.

  • Gifts of a photograph on canvas, Waterford crystal Capitol dome candy jar, unopened limited edition 60 CD set of Leonard Berstein’s “Symphony Edition New York Harmonic”, five-piece F.B. Rogers silver-plated tea set, costume jewelry, a case of wine, and so much more.

  • Experiences of a weekend getaway on the Chesapeake, Nationals tickets, a weekend stay at The Ven at Embassy Row hotel, including breakfast and parking, a catered lasagna meal, and a dozen cupcakes delivered for your special occasion.

We hope that there’s something for everyone.  Bid early and often!  Many thanks to those individuals and businesses that donated to the auction and to Home Instead who sponsored the auction so that 100% of all proceeds will go to the Village.

This year we’re on track to break all previous records. Through your generosity, we’ve provided FREE memberships to 30% of our members that need volunteer assistance.  Over 1,100 people from the community have attended one of our free events, such as a concert, a wellness clinic, or a Tuesday Talk. Nearly 1,000 friendly visits or phone calls have been made to older adults seeking companionship and 1,500 neighborly acts of kindness have been made. That’s a lot of rides, deliveries, errands, and tech support!

None of this would be possible without your generosity. Thank you, in advance, for your support of our Fall online auction. Please let your friends and networks know about the auction as anyone can bid on (and win) some terrific items and/or experiences.

— Frank Finamore, Executive Director

P.S. Our final concert of the year is being held tomorrow at 3pm. Join us on the lawn at 38th and Porter Streets in McLean Gardens to hear the wonderful music of Seneca Creek Bluegrass.
