Weekly Village News for January 10, 2025

From Frank...

This afternoon we kicked off our first line dancing class! The turnout was great and the instructor is both fun and helpful. We’ll have two more trial sessions, next Friday and the following, January 17 and 24, at 1pm. If we continue to have good interest, we’ll make this a regular activity, either weekly or bi-weekly. So, please be sure to register.

Next week, on Wednesday is our monthly Lunch Bunch. We’ll be going to Chef Geoff’s on New Mexico Ave. We’ll also host our second “Dial-In Social” on Thursday at 3pm. You just dial one local phone number and you’re in a group call with others. There’s no need to enter a pin or an access code. It couldn’t be simpler. I’ll lead an informal discussion on our favorite movies.

So, if you want to avoid the ice on the sidewalks and yet still want to be connected socially, just register by clicking here or calling the office at 202-615-5853. Once registered you’ll receive the number to call. Finally, I want to showcase a very special Tuesday Talk on January 21 at 7pm at the Cleveland Park Library. Professor and Village Member, Pat Roos, will share about the loss of her son, Alex, to heroin addiction and how she’s used her grief to fuel her advocacy for compassionate harm reduction measures. As someone with a sister with an addiction, I know all too well that it’s a difficult journey and likely one that many of us don’t like to talk about.

And yet, it’s so important to do so as part of our own self-care. I hope you’ll make the effort to come out and hear Pat’s talk, which will be followed by a brief presentation on harm reduction by DC’s Department of Behavioral Health. Free Naloxone (Narcan) will be available to attendees. Before the presentation, at 6:30 pm, Pat will be available to sign books which will be available for purchase in the Library Lobby.

Have a great weekend everyone. Stay warm and be safe on the snow and ice.

— Frank Finamore, Executive Director
