From Frank...

March is Women’s History Month. As someone with six older sisters, raised by a single-mom (as my parents separated shortly after I was born) I am a proud feminist! I’ve seen and experienced the leadership, ingenuity, strength, power, and love from so many women, but my earliest memories, of course, are from my mother and sisters. Growing up in the 70’s and hearing Helen Reddy belt out “I am woman, hear me roar…” likely influenced me as well!
Throughout the month, we’ll celebrate women in a few ways. First, we’ve moved our cultural event from its usual Thursday to Saturday, March 8th for a 1pm tour at the National Portrait Gallery focused on Carrie A. Nation and the prohibitionists, and other women who made history. I will be leading a group from the Woodley Park Metro to the museum, so if you’re interested, please register and we’ll be sure to coordinate those who wish to go via Metro. This will be a docent-led tour, and the group will likely have lunch following.
Then on March 12th at noon, we’ll have our third “Lunch & Learn” program featuring our member, Judy Waxman. Judy will give a talk on how women have always tried to control their fertility since 3000 BCE. The presentation is factual and based on a course that Judy taught at George Washington University on Reproductive Health.
It will be held in a condo building. Registration is required and the address will be provided in the confirmation email sent to registrants. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own lunch, and the Village will provide dessert and coffee.
Finally, on March 20th at 3pm, we will have another “Dial in Social” where you just dial a 202 number and then you’re connected to others (without having to enter any access code or pin – so it couldn’t be easier) where we will share stories of women that have influenced us. I will be facilitating this call and am looking forward to hearing your stories and maybe sharing my own. To register and receive the call in number, you can click here or call the office at 202-615-5853. Note that we don’t give out the call-in number here for security purposes. That said, this is a terrific opportunity for those that don’t use or like Zoom to join a conversation with others. It’s perhaps “old fashioned” but it’s been a lot of fun when we’ve had these conversations in past months.
I hope you’ll find an activity or program of interest. Remember that as a member of our Village, you also have access to select programs sponsored by other Villages. Be sure to see the list of those programs in this newsletter. And if you’re not yet a member, or you’re not sure if you’re a member, please be in touch with me! I can be reached at Frank@CWPV.org or on 202-615-5853. I’m always happy to talk about the two types of membership and love when new folks join this wonderful community that I’m privileged to lead!
